On Wednesday, September 17, IU Astronomy and Physics graduate students held the Fall 2025 Python Crash Course. As the first PyIU event of the academic year, this workshop was designed for beginners to both Python and astrophysics. The lesson content consisted of coding fundamentals like variable definitions, lists, loops, functions, and plotting - all while progressively working towards creating and analyzing the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for a real stellar cluster using real astronomical data. And of course, as always, while eating pizza!
The workshop was attended by students from more than 15 majors/disciplines, representing all levels: undergraduate, graduate, and beyond. We hope to see you at our Advanced Workshop slated for later this fall, where we'll cover more complex Python topics applied to cutting-edge astronomy and physics research.
All crash course materials are publicly available on the PyIU GitHub page here: https://github.com/BrandonRadzom/pyiu/tree/main/crash-course. Thanks to the IU Astronomy Department and the College of Arts and Sciences for their support of this event!
