IU undergraduate student Bradley Hutchinson, along with faculty member Caty Pilachowski, is featured on an episode of the American Astronomical Society’s Journal Author Series about Bradley’s recent paper in the Astronomical Journal. The paper is available online at https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2025AJ....170..255H/abstract .
Bradley chats with AAS Deputy Editor-in-Chief Frank Timmes about his work on a new machine learning approach to analyzing multiband photometry with a long short-term memory autoencoder. Bradley applied the method to analyze about 3 million stars in an annulus around the North Galactic Cap. He was able to reconstruct the observed photometry of 99.51% of the stars within 0.05 magnitudes from machine learning model. The approach is useful for detecting rare stellar types and anomalies.

The goal of this series is to connect authors with their article, their human story, and the larger astronomy community.
