IU Astronomy alumna Naomi Harkins is featured in the College’s weekly newsletter, highlighting Naomi’s experience studying abroad in Greece. Naomi studied abroad in Greece through the College's ASPIRE program. She describes her experience, living and studying in Greece while steeped in the history of the science and math we use today. The experience gave Naomi a new perspective on her major and gave her the opportunity to immerse herself in a different language and culture.
Naomi graduated this summer with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics, along with a minor in Mathematics. She’s one of thirteen graduates this year from our undergraduate program. While an undergraduate, Naomi worked with Professor Samir Salim, studying galaxy evolution by examining the gas-phase oxygen abundances and their relation to gas accretion, star formation, and outflows. Her research experience taught her to analyze complex data, apply advanced mathematical models, and connect theoretical questions to observational data. Naomi adds “ Studying Astronomy at IU was one of the best choices I ever made, and I am forever grateful for the knowledge and opportunities that came out of it.”
