Graduate student Sarah Popp, along with IU colleagues Constantine Deliyannis, Daniel Ornelas, and other collaborators, have recently published a UBVRI photometric study of old open star clusters NGC 2420 and NGC 2506 using data from the Half-Degree Imager on the WIYN 0.9 m telescope. From the photometric observations they were able to determine the reddening, distance modulus, metallicity, and ages of each cluster. Both clusters are a bit over two billion years old, with metallicities about a factor two below the sun’s.
