What do the
students think?
- I have had an experience that I will take with me as I enter the
research community. The one-on-one contact with my mentor was much
more than I expected. Even though the faculty here are extremely
busy, they are all excited to teach students how to conduct
research. Since the department is relatively small, we are lucky to
have the chance to really get to know the faculty, graduate
students, and our fellow REU students. In addition to the wonderful
work environment, Bloomington offers a wide range of extracurricular
activities. Stephanie Cortes-Clemson University
- My only complaint is that I'll have to leave my project. I
appreciated, contrary to some of my industry experience, that
students were given meaningful roles and duties immediately upon
their arrival. The program without a doubt has given clarity to my
intended graduate school ambitions/areas of study. Josh Adams-

For me, the Indiana University REU program was
an eye opening experience. It gave me a chance to experience both
the challenge and excitement of astronomical research. I was able
to witness the entire cycle of a research project, from observing at
Kitt Peak to finally presenting results in front of my peers. I
also had the opportunity to meet other students who share my
interests. It’s an awesome experience that I would recommend to
anybody interested in astronomy. Jessica Windschitl

I don't think even Con, my advisor, could have
predicted how realistic of a research experience I would achieve
this summer. I learned the process of astronomy research from
observation plans to presenting results, and had an added "bonus" of
having my project fail and then starting over with a new set of
data. The IU REU program taught me a lot about photometry, along
with other areas of astronomy through the various colloquiums held.
The best part for me was the amount of hands-on experience. With our
advisor there to answer questions, we did most of the work
ourselves- from collecting data at the WIYN 0.9m to reducing the
data and producing our research posters. I enjoyed work with my
research partner, Con, and the other REU students, grad students and
IU faculty. All of them were welcoming and friendly, as were any of
the other students I met around town. Bloomington is a great city,
especially if you like to eat (and you've got to try Aver's Pizza).
I can't wait for our REU reunion at the AAS meeting in January.
