The Program

The Astronomy Department at Indiana University Bloomington will host a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program for highly motivated students interested in astronomy research. Students will work with faculty to carry out projects in observational stellar astronomy and other fields using ground-based photometric and spectroscopic data.  Projects may include:

  • The determination of the properties of star clusters from cluster color-magnitude diagrams.

  • Studies of the composition of globular cluster stars.

  • Photometry of variable stars including cataclysmic variables and Algol-type binaries.

The program will include a trip to the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, AZ, where students will observe on the WIYN 0.9-m telescope and/or the WIYN 3.5-m telescopes as well as tour Kitt Peak and other Tucson astronomical facilities.  While in residence in Bloomington, students will also participate in seminars, field trips, and social events.
