Two Fiber High Resolution Echelle spectrographs are under construction at Indiana University, one (FHiRE) for use on the 3.5-m WIYN telescope , and the second (FHiREBot) for use on IU's 1.25-m robotic telescope (Spectrobot) in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest, north of campus.
The spectrographs are designed for operational efficiency to produce high dispersion spectral libraries of thousands of stars. The goal is an echelle spectrograph capable of collecting dozens to hundreds of spectra per night using a fixed format and standardized observing and calibration protocols feeding a data reduction pipeline and spectral archive.
Commissioning of the FHiRE and FHiREBot spectrographs is expected during the 2007-8 academic year.
FHiRE is supported through funding from the IU Office of the Vice President for Research through the Faculty Research Support Program.
FHiREBot is supported through the PREST program of the National Science Foundation.
