Construction of the WIYN
3.5 meter
(11.4 feet, 137 inches) telescope was completed in the
summer of 1994 and is fully commissioned on Kitt Peak in
Arizona. WIYN
is a collaboration between
Wisconsin, Indiana, Yale, and NOAO
(National Optical Astronomy Observatories). The telescope has
been in active use since the last quarter of 1995. With the facility
completed, the faculty and students of the Astronomy Department at
Indiana University will have access to a truly world class telescope.
Already the telescope has produced stunning images and
animations of the recent
Saturn ring crossing. Astronomy Magazine's December 1996 issue,
recently published an article about the WIYN telescope on Kitt Peak.
This telescope is expected to produce top quality research images for years to come.
